A new type of Flappy Bird game, are you sure? Yes, I am, and it’s called ‘Flying Face’, developed by a Spark AR developer @dvoshansky. I can tell you upfront that even if you aren’t a fan of the original Flappy Bird game, you might want to stick around and hear a little bit more about it.
Let’s start with the fact that this is not a mobile game that you download directly from the App Store or Google Play, for iOS or Android respectively. This is an Instagram filter, also sometimes referred to as ‘effect’, or ‘mask’. You can call it an interactive filter but it’s a game for all intents and purposes and it players very similar to the original Flappy Bird game that was developed by Dong Nguyen, when he worked at dotGears company.
This was in 2013 and 6 years after comes a new developer, dubbed @dvoshansky on Instagram (don’t know the full name) and he inspired by the original game but at some twists over the original gameplay.
To play the game you\ll need the Instagram app installed. This is the only way you can download the filter and play it on your phone. I made a full step-by-step instructional guide on how to download and play Flappy Bird for Instagram, so make sure you check it out.
So what makes this game so special and different than the original Flappy Bird mobile game (released for iOS and Android). Well, it’s all about the way you control the bird character in the game and some other cool features.
The bird is controlled using eye blinking. Say what?! Yes, you don’t use tapping, you blink with your eyes. If that’s sound strange, you might not be familiar with Instagram filters yet. Instagram filters are mini-apps the run on a special ‘filter’ section on Instagram. They are developed using software called Spark AR Studio, which was developed by Facebook. Creators can create really cool stuff with it, including camera effects, face masks, camera filters and yes, also interactive filters and games.
There are limitations of course and as of the time of writing, you can’t actually make full pledged games using this platform and developers do have limited computing resource restrictions to work with. That being said, it doesn’t mean that they can’t create fun little games and will make lots of people enjoy playing. This is exactly what Dvoshansky did with his Flappy Bird Instagram filter, or in its recognizable filter name ‘Flying Face‘.
How the gameplay actually work. Well, when you start the game, you need to quickly start blinking with your eyes, because every blink with either one eye or both eyes will be the only way to keep your little birdy in the air flying/ If you stop blinking, gravity will pull the bird downwards towards the ground. If the bird reaches the ground (the bottom of the screen) or collides with the green walls, it’s game over. Your goal, hang on as much as possible and try to get the highest score possible.
This might sound crazy, playing a mobile game inside IG app and not just that, play it with blinking, but trust me, once you start playing it, you’ll understand how addicting it is and you’ll want to play more.
Dvoshansky also included a 2-player co-op local multiplayer game mode that overlaps, which allow two players to play Flappy Bird at the same time on the same phone. Another awesome feature is having your own face (or faces if you play with a friend) on top of the bird’s face. A face with your actual face flying in a game, that’s hilarious and I still have a blast seeing it every single time.
Flappy Bird Instagram game, an IG filter that surprised everyone and was able to deliver a rare gameplay experience, one that many people enjoy playing and sharing their own experiences.
The best thing is to try Flappy Bird IG game yourself by downloading Instagram if you haven’t got it already, follow dvoshansky and try it out. I hope you’ll have fun as much as I do, and now please forgive me, I am going back to play some more before bedtime. Nighty night.
